Please report back in on this. I'm fascinated about the possibility of a 2x converter.

My order from camerafilters.com arrived today. I'll report on it in a separate note. They were quick and friendly (though, of course, sample size =1).

Please let us know your thoughts on the 49mm-49mm adapter as well. Seems like it may be nearly the same part as Fuji sells (sans the silver color).

You bet. I also bought the 'blank' filter ring, which seems like it'll do the same thing only is a bit deeper (thicker). I'll try to get some pics up next week. Intial perception is that they'll work, though they seem to be pretty soft aluminum with less-than-perfect threads, so they take a gentle hand.

The $5 49mm Female/Female Coupling Ring ring suggested earlier in this thread (thanks stedge) has arrived. Fits perfectly. Nice compact form. 49mm thread on inside goes front to back. Shown here with a Pentax clip-in lens cap from Amazon. Just waiting for the $12.95 vented hood. Thanks for the tips!

Hah! At first I thought you were talking about the hood, which would be a ~3x increase and a little absurd, but $36 for the step down ring (10x increase) is simply laughable! There's NO reason to pay more than $5 with shipping from an online chinese store, maybe $7-8 from a local retailer.

Here's a nice shiny one that might look nice on the X100 for $12:

Hey Brett,
Thanks for all of the great info! Ordered the hood from ebay and the step down from amazon for $8 including 2 day shipping with Amazon Prime.
That saves me 120 bucks!

All combined : wrist strap, screen protectors, adapter/hood, and crumpler camera bag for $88 including shipping!

Now I just need to get comfortable with this camera....

A step down would be a 52 to 49; a step up would be a 49 to 52

Somehow I was under the impression that the threads might be the same just depending which way it's used. Good thing I asked.

Also with the metal hood can you still fit a 49mm filter on the lens?

Correct! And if you buy a B+W 49mm XS-PRO filter (slim) you can even get the X100 into the original Fuji case wearing the filter adaptor and the B+W filter mounted, without cap ofcourse.

I ordered the $5 49mm female to 49mm female adapter, and a 49mm heavystar vented hood. Will use a heliopan thin rim 49mm UV filter between the adapter and hood. Will post pics when I have the adapter.

...and for those who are looking at the alternatives here. The straight 49mm Female/Female Coupling Ring is the ideal solution. Better than a step down ring.

BTW a 58mm snap on lens cap fits perfectly at the end of this hood. (A 49mm will fit inside, but drive you nuts!)

For those hoping to screw a 49mm filter into the inside of the Zykkor hood, it does not work :(

I'm not sure what the "Double threaded which allows you to mount this hood to lens and filter at the same time" claim in the listing is supposed to mean.

Why inside? Wouldn't you just screw a 49mm filter onto the 49mm coupler and then the hood into the filter? You could screw a 58mm onto the end of the lens hood--but I'm not sure that's a good idea...

Thanks for the confirmation. Looks like my idea will require a different hood. :(

Scott,

If you attach a filter after the coupler, will the lens hit it in macro mode?

I don't think the lens will hit the filter as it is spaced forward by the coupler (just as with the Fuji OEM one.) I opted to forgo the filter and just use a 58mm lens cap that snaps on the end of the hood for pocket and bag use. The lens should be well-protected by the vented hood.

I use a 49mm cap inside the Zykkor hood, if you get one with the pinch in the middle it shouldn't drive you nuts, in fact it's very easy.

Good point Brett. I just happened to have an extra 58mm that fits perfectly on the end...

Two reasons. Primarily because the lens hits the filter during close focus with the adapter I'm using. But even if that wasn't the case, I would still prefer the filter inside of the hood so that the filter doesn't add length to the setup.

Here's mine with a Bower step down adapter and the hood from the da' Bay. Please pardon the iPhone shot.
I thought I read the answer to a question I have around here but can't fine it now. There is an external thread on the 49mm end of the adapter. Anyone have a guess or know it's size? If it too is 52mm I'm thinking about putting a second adapter on to hold a filter then the hood. With a filter on the first adapter in Macro the plastic lens housing does extend out far enough to hit the filter. I tried it - horrible noise and a screen alert to shut off the camera. I don't think I'll try that again.

OK, now I'm confused. I order the Zykkor hood which arrived. Check.

I ordered the step down 52mm-49mm adapter ring which has also arrived. Check.

The Zykkor screws into the 52-49 with no problem. Check.

The 49mm adapter does NOT screw into the X100! WTF?! Not even close. I went to the camera shop today and they though a 46mm ring would fit the Fuji lens, but no way would it fit and allow any clearance for the barrel of the lens to mov as it must during focusing.

What am I doing wrong?! Help!

My simple solution. Went to local store and got 2 $9.99 49mm filters. Broke the glass out of one and attached it backwards to X100, then attached the filter with glass on top of that. Finally added the silver ring from the lens to make it look a little neater. And that is it. Works well, cheap and fast. I am not a big hood person.

You are unscrewing and removing the smooth chrome ring at the outermost part of the lens to expose the 49mm threads, right?
