Cheap Adaptor RIng Alternative

Does your two filter (one with glass removed) solution fit into the Fuji leather case? I have the case already, but the camera hasn't arrived yet. I'm afraid that it might be too long with the Fuji trim piece on top, but maybe with just the two filters?

OK, now I'm confused. I order the Zykkor hood which arrived. Check.
I ordered the step down 52mm-49mm adapter ring which has also arrived. Check.
The Zykkor screws into the 52-49 with no problem. Check.
The 49mm adapter does NOT screw into the X100! WTF?! Not even close. I went to the camera shop today and they though a 46mm ring would fit the Fuji lens, but no way would it fit and allow any clearance for the barrel of the lens to mov as it must during focusing.
What am I doing wrong?! Help!
Are you sure you got a 52mm to 49mm step DOWN adapter? A step up adapter won't work.
When you remove the ring from the X100 lens it exposes a 49mm male thread. The step down adapter is threaded 49mm female all the way through (the 52mm male thread actually isn't used for anything), so you just thread it right on the front of the X100, which then leaves a 49mm female thread available for a hood, filter, cap, etc.

Hi Argus, No care here, so I am not sure. the silver ring can easily be left off - I just put it on to avoid loosing it. Overall with the 2 filters the camera seems still quire compact, so I would not be surprised if the case still fits. HTH, Dmitry

Hello Dmitry can you confirm that in macro mode, the lens doesn't hit the glass ?
Thx
pvrl,
The answer to your question is in post #1 of this thread! HTH!

I sanded down the filters with 200 grit, and tada! Looks pretty nice. I'm still waiting for my hood and step-down filter, though I may just keep it this way.

Does the stacked reversed UV filters plus fuji ring on top allow for original lens cap to click on?

Thanks for those who have been sharing their setup. Really helpful stuff.

In my experience, no. I ordered a pinch lock 49mm cap though from adorama. I'll post pics of that when it arrives.

for the 49mm straight thru ring, do you buy the rotating or non-rotating? there appears to be two and the links here doesn't seem to work. thanks
Try this updated link for the connector:

And this for the vented Zykkor hood. (The link will expire in a few days.)

I just got the 49mm female to female adapter (
) in the mail today. I'm using it with a B+W 49mm XS-PRO filter. For those that are considering this setup, manually turning the focus ring to the closest focus seems to work fine, but using AF on close objects results in the lens hitting the filter and the camera requesting to be turned off and on again. Maybe it is the case that using AF results in the lens extending further than where it would finally settle at the minimum focusing distance. In any event, AF+macro is problematic with this setup.
I thought this might happen, as the Fuji filter adaptor looks quite deep, so I ordered 2 of the female to female PLUS a male to male (49mm) to extend the ring to avoid the possibility of the lens hitting the filter. I don't have it yet, so I'll post my findings when I get it.

Very inexpensive and the glass was pretty easy to remove once broken after I whacked it with a small hammer. An odd experience to say the least.
I then mounted a B+W 49mm UV on it and a vented screw-in hood. 'All good with no issue when the lens is in macro mode.
A great holdover until the hoods and filter adapters arrive.
. . . Burkey

How about using a spacer ring, e.g. made of a thin sheet of plastic? You'll need to experiment with various sheet thickness until you get the hood cutout to the right position in relation to the VF. The spacer is a ring with an inner diameter of ~50mm and an outer diameter of ~ 53mm (if in doubt, measure the diameters of your step-down adapter ring).everything looks good after mounting, but when both the ring and hood are screwed on tight, the slot in the hood is only partially visible, thus a portion of the view finder is blocked by the hood. i can loosen the hood a little bit, so the viewfinder can see thru the slot but then the lose hood bothers me. whats the best work around??

I was very happy to see that my hood and adapter lined the vent up perfectly with the OVF. If it had not, like yours, I may have tried a different adapter or two since they're so cheap, or simply glued the adapter and hood together in the right position (epoxy or heavy duty loc-tite).

Shim it with a neoprene "o" ring, available at most hardware store...cheap.

The straight 49mm Female/Female Coupling Ring is the ideal solution. Better than a step down ring.
Can anyone tell me why the extension ring would be better than a stepdown ring?

Just got the vented hood. Perfect!
...and for those who are looking at the alternatives here. The straight 49mm Female/Female Coupling Ring is the ideal solution. Better than a step down ring.

BTW a 58mm snap on lens cap fits perfectly at the end of this hood. (A 49mm will fit inside, but drive you nuts!)

Will the setup as above work with this filter i bought ?
I'm just curious how would you mount the hood after the filter has been attached on the coupling/step down ring??

So that means you can't put a uv filter in between the two? I'm still debating whether or not to buy a filter
I'm not using a filter. I prefer to leave the lens as is and feel the metal hood provides enough protection. If you want to add in a filter, you will have to make sure the connector is deep enough to keep the lens' front element (in macro mode) from crashing as it moves forward. I'm concerned that requirement leaves too much space between the lens and filter and will create spurious reflections. And as reprezent says, if you still want to add a filter it must also have front threading.
