I would have expected more information on the new 55-200 lens to be leaking/dripping out.
But apart from the specification information there has been nothing else.

Or have I missed it ?

Earlier today, I was told at a reputable camera shop in London that it is due to be released in the next month.

May is the due date for the 55-200 but we have no hint of weight, price or performance.

Regarding performance I would expect the lens to match or be as good as a performer as the 18-55.  In reality I expect that it might be better as lens design should be easier but the 18-55 is so good that I wonder if they can really improve on its performance.  I have only seen one problem with the 18-55 and that is in IR use where I get an IR hotspot.

I just hope it is not a monster size wise, and it should not being a pretty slow lens in terms of aperture.  We are not talking about F/2.8 constant lens

At 55mm it is bigger than XF18-55 (also at 55mm) and much bigger at 200mm (which is not a surprise) and weights 580g due to official specification.

Please Login or Register to see this Hidden Content

XF18-55 is ø65.0mm x 70.4mm(Wide)/97.9mm(Telephoto)

XF55-200 will be ø75.0mm x 118mm(Wide)/176.5mm(Telephoto) and will take 62mm filters.

The predicted price was around $699 in NA and around 699€ in EU.

Regards

...and there is a little "softness" caused by spherical aberration at full aperture at the long end - though it doesn't bother me as it can be quite flattering for portraits, but can be reduced in post processing if required.

Might be wrong but I think that artuk is talking about the 18-55 rather than the 55-200

DPReview have a preview of it, here is an extract about the auto focus (which uses the same twin linear motor design of the 18-55):

The XF 55-200mm uses linear stepper motors for autofocus, which means it's almost silent in operation. The lens we handled is very much pre-production, but our initial impressions are that its AF speed is pretty much what we'd expect from the X-system - not the fastest in class, but for most purposes not unusably slow either. It's never going to come close to a similar-priced SLR setup for focus tracking on moving subjects, but that's never really been a strength of this type of camera system anyway.

Forgot to say it looks like some of the "leaked"/announced specification that came from Focus On Imaging in the UK in March was wrong - that stated it had 4 focus motors, which appears not to be the case, though it looks like the size and weight were correct - it is a pretty heavy lens at 580g.  DPReview also have a helpful table of focal lengths and apertures, which are in line with what you might expect for this zoom / aperture range.

I just wish there was a solid release date. I pre-ordered just in case. But if it's not coming by June, then I'd like to cancel since I only really need it for the one trip right now.

Fuji have confusingly stated that the lens can focus in 0.28s, but then in a statement about revised firmware for the cameras, say they can focus on 0.7 seconds.

The statement can be found in this weeks Amateur Photographer news section (UK), the oldest running photography magazine in the UK.
