  • AF-S
  • AE metering = multi *
  • EVF/OVF display modes = custom display (needs to be configured separately for EVR and OVF)
  • Smallest AF window in EVF
  • Live histogram
  • Save RAW only *
  • Auto-ISO on (Max. ISO 3200, slowest shutter speed 1/100s) *
  • ISO = 200 (this value also serves as lowest ISO value in auto ISO mode) *
  • Fn configured for ND filter *
  • Flash off
  • Shutter sound off §
  • All other sounds off §
  • AF assist light off §
  • DR = 100
  • AF mode = Area
  • Silent mode = off
  • Auto pwr off = 5 min
  • OVF pwr save mode = off
  • Quick start mode = on
  • AE/AF lock mode = on/off switch *
  • AE/AF lock button = AF-L *
  • Focus check = on
  • Framing guideline = grid 9
  • Long exposure NR = on
  • Save org image = off
  • Autorotate PB = off
  • corrected AF frame = on (V. 1.10 firmware only)
* use to your taste and needs, YMMV
§ this effectively is like silent mode, but leaves you all options open for flash operation etc.

I have pretty much the same as Arjay, except:

  • Live histogram - I do NOT use this.
  • Auto-ISO on (Max. ISO 3200, slowest shutter speed 1/100s) - I usually switch between 1/60 and 1/125, depending on where I am.
  • OVF pwr save mode = off on
  • DR set to AUTO

EDIT: I forgot one point, I also have DR set to auto, so I added that to the list above...

Caution - this slows down AF operation.

Yes, the manual claims that. I tried with it on and off and I couldn't feel a difference, so I figured I'd rather save a bit of power since X100 can't stand to be close to a battery without sucking the juice out of it.

Well, I just tested it, and it does make a difference - approx. 0.2s with every focus measurement (you can even hear an additional noise if OVF pwr save mode is On). I'd rather have my X100 operate as fast as possible and carry some spare batteries with me than get mad at a sluggish camera ...

But 0.2s is about so fast that you can barely measure it because the human delay in pressing the "stop"-button on the stop watch is probably around the same length :)

I'll give it a try again and see if i can *feel* a difference, otherwise I'll keep "OVF power save mode".

RAW only (I have never shot a jpeg with my X100).

No power saving

Auto ISO Off

DR100

Fn = ISO
Set to 400 in the summer and 800 in the winter; changed as required
ISO range 200-1600, I use Lightroom to boost exposure instead of in-camera software amplification

MF/OVF - good light, good contrast; subject distance greater than about 8 ft.
AF/AE button to initiate focus, Command Lever to check or make fine adjustments.

AFS/EVF (smallest focus box) - poor light, poor contrast subject is closer than about 8 ft.

AFS/OVF - good light, good contrast; little risk of focus jumping to a background area with high contrast

Focus Confirmation beep on

Multi Meter Mode

Manual Exposure
Exposure set based on meter's initial guess and modified by my prior experience

Apertur Priority Exposure - when time is of the essence

No movies, no macros

How exactly does one change the size of the AF square? I can't seem to find that option.

  • Select EVF or LCD
  • Press and hold the AF button on the left-hand side of the LCD
  • Press the command control rocker switch left or right and watch the AF frame size change

I'm not sure what you mean... but you can return to normal shooting mode by simply letting go of all buttons. Then, you will automatically be back in normal shooting mode.

And is it just me or when this option is on, the inside of the comp frame is filled with a 20% opacity white "layer"?
That was my main reason to turn it off as I want the viewfinder to be crystal clear at all times.

It's only until you half-press, then it comes normal again (and stays like that for a while).

I use two different settings, depending upon what I shoot.

For my street shooting / people snaps I use:

-DR 400%
-Auto ISO: on, up to 3200 with lowest speed 1/30s
-Review: off (I pretty much trust the camera and check only occasionally)
-Quality: Fine+Raw
-OVF power save: on
-Quick start mode: off
-Fn button: ND (I love wide open apertures)
-Aperture priority (DOF control is more important to me)

For portrait shooting in studio with +/- fixed lighting set up:

-DR 100%
-Auto ISO: off / ASA setting depending on light situation
-Review: off (I pretty much trust the camera and check only occasionally)
-Quality: Raw
-OVF power save: off (for faster focus)
-Quick start mode: off
-Fn button: ND (I love wide open apertures)
-Aperture priority (DOF control is more important to me)

It is a pain in the neck having to change these settings for each shooting situation and I wish it would be possible to save the complete different settings in the Custom-options. Maybe in the next firmware!?!

But I love this little camera!

You can do this for up to 3 different settings. On page 3 of the shooting menu select "Edit/Save Custom Setting". Select any of the "Custom 1/2/3". The very first option is "Save Current Settings". Voila! Done. To change between saved settings, the menu selection immediately above this one is "Select Custom Setting". Choose one of the 3.

Now wouldn't that be beautiful... Unfortunately, those custom settings are limited to film/JPG development settings (ISO, dynamic range, film simulation, white balance, color, highlight tone, shadow tone, sharpness and noise reduction). None of these are all too relevant for RAW shooters.

And what makes it worse, hardly any of the settings described above in this thread can be saved into custom settings. :(

Actually, I think the settings discussed above ought to be saveable in custom settings. This would be much more useful than a couple of film emulations that are purely of academic interest to RAW shooters.

Ooops my bad, I was all excited to be able to contribute finally and screwed it up lol. Sorry

I wished it were that simple...

The only custom settings you can store, are the ones proposed on the custom settings option page - only a very few - I'm missing the auto-ISO and OVF power save mode, for example... (all options on the camera 'set-up' page are simply ignored)

Also, every time you turn the camera off, it oddly jumps back to the 'Custom 1' position, very annoying!

I upgraded to firmware version 1.20 and have lost the ability to have OVF live histogram and horizon level. Can't seem to find where to select either option. I have everything checked on the display custom settings for both OVF and EVF.

  • Select OVF
  • Put your eye close to the eyepiece, then
  • press Disp/Back to select Custom Display mode. The desired display features should now be available.
  • Do the same again after selecting EVF/LCD.

Arjay,

That worked like a charm. I had live histogram and horizon level, but lost it when I updated to firmware 1.13 and was really missing it after upgrading to firmware 1.20. I don't remember pushing the display button before while looking though the viewfinder, but I may have done it by mistake. Thanks again. Wish my D700 soon to be D800E had that feature.

No changes. Please note that my settings are optimized for AF-S mode operation.

There seems to be a problem with the coincidence of the AF frame and the effectively used focus measuring area in MF mode in the new V 1.20 firmware. I haven't done sufficient testing of this problem yet to comment or suggest a workaround.

But you should be fine with AF-S.
