My new X100 needs a nice leather neck strap but as I also intend to use a Gordy wrist strap I'd like a leather strap that I can put on and take off easily as required and leave the Gordy on permanently.
I've seen a photo of one of the members X100 on this site with what was stated as the Fuji leather case and the strap was sporting nice clips but all the other photos I've seen of the Fuji case and strap shows the thread through attachment.
Anyone out there use a quick release neck strap? I'm sure I'm not the only one that wants this arrangement as I've had years of using large DSLR's with the obligatory neck strap getting in the way most of the time.

I bought a dodgy second hand strap with the correct size clips for a buck from a camera repair shop. Chopped off the clips. Threaded them through the fuji strap. Voilas. Also I made some little leather O rings to put around the little triangle clips, to stop my quick release clips from grinding on the camera surface. Works a charm.

It may be worth butchering something else to get the strap you want. I spent ages looking for an off the shelf solution before realizing I could cobble something better. Apologies for the iPhone shot.

Edit: You'll notice the wrist strap I use is very lightweight. That helps keep it out of the way when I'm shooting with the neck strap attached. I just leave it on dangling, or wrap it around the base of the camera, and it seldom causes problems

Pavig, that is perfect, thanks, just what I'm after. I'll go ahead and order the Fuji case & strap and go looking for an old strap to butcher.

Be aware that the fuji strap may be a tough short for some folk. I find it only just long enough to leave the camera around stomach height. Luckily the clips give it an inch or so, but it's still a tight fit worn behind the neck and over the shoulder as I do. You can lift it to your eye without getting tangled, but it's a little awkward. If you just wear your strap around your neck (rather than behind your back) you'll most likely find it long enough.

Also the fuji case does not close perfectly with the adapter and filter attached. I got a very thin uv filter (as you can see), and though it doesn't close tight, it's adequate protection for me. If you're fussy about such things, or leave a thicker filter on, you may run into problems. Just FYI.

Thanks for that Pavig. I will only use the the strap around my neck. I have a small bag that the X100 lives in that I wear neck and shoulder style. I'm aware that I won't be able to use the top half of the case, It's a shame that there isn't an option of buying just the bottom half of the Fuji case.

Although not leather you might want to look at the Konica type D strap.

I have one on both my X100 and my R-D1 and will be looking to pick up another couple for my SLRs. It consists of a very sturdy and comfortable wrist strap with an extension that cleverly attached to the other strap lug by a secure clip and has a craft clip for the end of the wrist strap to locate into.

The are about £7 gbp off ebay.

I made my own.

The metal clip hardware came from an olde Polaroid camera. The plastic clips were purchased in Tokyu-Hands Japan.

You are welcome. I ended up using 20mm too since 15mm felt inadequate in size.

Has anyone of you guys replaced the triangular Fuji eyelets with round ones? One of my neckstrap lugs is already showing signs of deterioration (a known issue) so I have used an Optech string connector to minimize that effect, but I do not like the way the neckstrap twists with them.

I replaced the triangles with round ones that were in my parts drawer. But, the link above (for the titanium clips)
www.uniquetitanium.com - clips
also has BRASS split rings listed. These sound ideal to me, in terms of metal to metal, as brass is a good bit softer than the steel used in most split rings. I've been thinking about the Optech connectors too—sorry to hear they have their own problems.

You see, the string connectors are designed to be looped around the lug. When you put them on the camera, the top of the connector is angled towards the rear of the camera, while the strap expects to find them angled towards the inside of the camera. So the strap twists slightly. I wish I could explain it better in words, maybe I'll post a picture later on.

It's not as if it is a huge problem, I definitely prefer them to the triangular rings.

As for the brass rings you mentioned, I suppose they should be more gentle to the lugs than the stainless steel ones, but I am not sure if they'll provide more protection, the metal of the lugs seems to be extremely soft, so maybe even the brass rings can damage it, with the edges of the rings. Who knows? So for the time being, I'll live with the OpTech strings and their slight twisting. Or I'll try to come up with a "custom solution" with parts from my "garbage collection".

If you want a nice half case, just get a Gariz one, that way you don't have to remove the case in order to change the battery, SD card or to use a tripod. I have a Fuji case, so I'm speaking from firsthand experience. I would have been much more pleased with the Gariz case. As for the strap, I find the Fuji one to be really uncomfortable. I ended up buying a nice neophrene one from Amazon for a few dollars and it's a lot easier on my neck. B)

I guess I am a grumpy old man and I have to have everything as I want it. I removed the OpTech connectors and replaced them with this contraption that I fabricated myself.

Posted Image

The grey material (which looks like a shoe lace) was from a hand-strap of an old Nokia phone, I had in my "garbage collection". It's very strong, I tried to break it, but I couldn't. I used some Super Glue to create a figure "8" with the one loop containing the lug and the other hosting the end of my neck strap. Then, just to be on the safe side, I wrapped the middle of the "8" with some very strong thread and added a few stitches as well. LoRL, you can't have enough safety features when your cameras health is at stake.

Goodbye damaged lugs!

They also have split rings.

After more than 1 year of use and switching it back and forth between X100 and X-Pro, I find the 'tongue' of the clip not closing tightly. If there's a slight gap, the clip might be released from the X-Pro1 lug if it is pushed straight forward towards the tongue. X-Pro1 lugs are more rounded off and thinner in the edges than the X100 lugs.

So be careful, make sure the tongue is closed tightly and there is no gap. If there is a gap, it can be tightened quite easily by releasing one end of the tongue and bend it slightly.

Just a warning. I have never dropped my cameras due to this since the movement needed is rather unusual and if not switched repeatedly as I have done, it's not a problem whatsoever.

I recommend these yet again. No lug wear and make it very easy to change between hand strap and the neck strap.
