I know what the reviews say but I assume if I turn the LCD off and only use the optical viewfinder, I would get much better battery life. Anyone tried this? I started doing it (pretending my X20 is like a film camera; no LCD). So far after a few days I haven't used up the battery. Anyone else?

But how many photos have you taken during that period?

Not many, maybe 150 or so. No budge on the battery gauge.

well yes, it will certainly use less battery. But you are using less of your camera's capability.

The X20 is very like the X10 and the early X100/X-Pro/XE models. It will go from full charged to completely flat in about 1.5 photos. Somewhere in the high 100's is what I always got out of the X10 when I used it regularly (primarily with the LCD on to frame and review) but I learnt to ALWAYS carry a spare battery to avoid the disappointment that early Fuji cameras used to inflict on owners.

I resisted the temptation of the X20 but the X30 with the larger battery was irresistable. My X30 battery seems to last forever.
