All true...actually they do "see" motion pretty well but a lot of the time they are looking like they are staring at "prey" (such as a fly in the room :), they are really looking for a little motion and smelling. Or so I'm told. I think I was a dog in a previous life :)

    EXCELLENT Rick !
can you give some additional BTS info ? did you do any PP on the eyes ? how close were you ?
i am CONSTANTLY struggling to avoid "zombie eyes" especially when pupils are as dilated as those and the flash is on axis with the camera

Thanks! Folks seem to like this photo more than I do. Shot at f/16, 1/35 sec, ISO 200.
I was pretty close and the image is slightly cropped to more center her face. Shot in RAW, used Classic Chrome in LrCCC, then converted to B&W and used a brush to blacken the "zombies" pupils.

    What does "BTS" mean?

Rick....how close were you ? (that would give me an idea of what the WCL does on the X100F)

BTS is short for 'behind the scenes'.
it's handy to take a shot of the set up when the set up requires a set up (multiple lights/modifiers/gobos/gels, etc), if u catch my drift. especially helpful when you are practicing new light set ups or experimenting and want to duplicate a shot that came out well. i'm not at that level where my lighting can be 'guestimated' very well and often i still use a light meter regardless of what the camera can compute. it's just as fast for me to meter a shot that way

the distortion from wide angle lenses can often make dogs and pets unique and/or add to the cute factor.....it usually has the opposite effect when applied to humans //LOL//

you did a great job of processing the eyes since they don't look processed to me. i only do MINIMAL post on eyes since they are so important in portraiture, and dogs and cats can/do reflect a helluva lot of light. especially a shot like this when ambient light is low and pupils are dilated. when i shoot this type of shot i actually shine a light to get the pupils to "stop down", but even that fails a lot. the only way i have been able to get good eyes has been to REALLY make the light source large and soft. i have started doing more pet photography, but for tyis reason and others it is more challenging for me than shooting people.

when i shoot people i rarely attempt to fix eyes with iris enhancement unless it was a high fashion or extreme glamour shot with lots of make up, color contacts, etc etc...... but if i do, i farm it out...:)

    Thanks for the info JRick!

I rechecked, and that shot was taken without the WCL, but I don't know how to edit my post to correct it. This was a very casual shot (the Star dog is rarely immobile), just playing around with the flash - since I've never used it before.
