Ladies and gentlemen, start your engines!!! In a move that goes against my natural tendency to do things at the very last minute, I thought I'd set up the official One Lens Challenge thread a bit early so it's ready to go for everyone .

    The rules are simple:
    1. The challenge starts on May 1st and ends on May 7th.
    2. Pick a single lens to shoot with and tell everyone what it is.
    3. You are free to use multiple camera bodies as long as it is the same lens.
    4. Post a photo every day (post more than one of you like).

    Optional
    5. If you can, try and post any details about the image such as aperture and shutter speed etc.

Post when you can and feel free to comment. Most of all however...ENJOY!!!

Glad I set the page up early. I hadn't thought about the fact that it's already May 1st in other parts of the world. Awesome start.

I suspect a practical joke. Look at @Richard_R and @Morten Mitchell Larød s pictures...I think we have one person with two accounts who is using two different lenses in two different countries in order to score double entries and this "catching the other in the act" post is just a ruse to distract us from the truth!

Now I really need to stop playing around and select my lens...

Great idea! I've been thinking it's time to get better acquainted with my 35 1.4 so I'll use that one for this challenge.

May 1st is hours away but it's fun to see others who are ahead timewise.

image.jpg Man, still deliberating in the 11th hour. I'm going to cheat a bit here and post my first image (two, really) to help me decide between lenses. The images are of the same subject (although not identical) taken with the final two contenders.

First up is the Tokina 11-16/2.8 in Nikon mount. F5.6. Focal length: 15mm-ish :)

image.jpg The next contender is the unusual Velvet 56mm, again in Nikon mount. This was taken at f2.8, which at this distance still reveals a touch of the lenses soft qualities. In general, this lens just begins to pass for a "regular" lens at f2.8, depending on subject distance and lighting.

The light on both cases was provided by an MTL (Magic Tube Light).

EDIT: used with Lens Turbo 2. F stop quoted is what the lens was set to using markings on the lens, f2.8. With the lens Turbo 2, this would be f2 :). But especially in the case of this lens, I think it is important to know the setting "on the lens" since it affects how the lens renders.

I'd like to see what you can do with all that wideness.

As long as we're cheating, er I mean warming up, I did take the challenge lens for a warm-up at the beach this evening. The Vivitar 90mm/2.8 1:1 macro lens in Minolta Mount, here showing some of the range that this lens is capable of on my Fuji X-E2. These are all hand-held at around f11 or so, minimum 1/250 second, with ISO up to 1600 max.

The schedule looks fairly open this week, so count me in. At first I was tempted to choose the XF90 (it needs some love), but I’m anticipating many situations this week where the XF100-400 will be the lens of choice (thus usually mounted, ready to go, and close at hand), so I will work with that.

This raises the question: "What lens is best for the bed-ridden?" Probably macro, or at least close-focusing.
