Tränenpalast or Palace Of Tears was the border control in Berlin between East and West. Its located at Friedrichstraße railway station in what was then the GDR.
This was where East Berliners had to say goodbye to friends, family and loved ones before they returned to the West, hence the name.
Unusually bright and airy for a building in the East, probably intentional to promote the claim it was there to provide hospitality for travellers.
Thought leaving the two little lads in the photo was a poignant reminder of how much happier things are now (for the overwhelming majority)
